[Blog] Ivar’s first impression of The Ezio Collection
I have played the newly released Ezio Collection for quite some time right now. That’s why I want to give you my first impression, so you can hear my opinion about this collection. In short: I am quite surprised and happy with the remake.
It is quite weird to play with Ezio again, it has been about 7 years since the last time I played with Ezio Auditore da Firenze. While I was sceptical at best, I actually didn’t even wanted to buy the trilogy, I cannot be happier with my choice to get it at release.
I played the Ezio Collection on an Xbox One with a 4K HDR television for my impression, which was a great choice. While I expected a slim upgrade in graphical quality due to the trailer, I was really surprised that the game was actually so much improved. The colors have been given a touch up and are way more vivid. The mediterranean environment is clearly visible instead of the brownish colour palet from the original games. Below are some screenshots from the game we made at MyCreed, so you can see for yourself how much the game’s graphical quality has improved. Another big plus is the greatly increased draw distance and quality of the distance.
While the graphics have been improved greatly, the gameplay is sadly exactly the same. I have played all Assassin’s Creed games and my last one was Rogue last holiday. While Rogue has last generation gameplay, even that game feels way better controller wise than the Ezio Trilogy. In the couple of hours that I played I fell multiple times to my death due to the controller. Sometimes I encountered a bug in which Ezio just jumped from a roof doing the exact opposite of what I commanded him to do. I hope Ubisoft will release a patch for this as soon as possible.
The story is something I don’t want to address so much, because I feel all of you should experience it yourself. I did encounter smoother transitions in cutscenes but the story is exactly the same as the previous games. All the Downloadable Content is added in the games from the start though, which means for some people the trilogy will bring at least 15 to 20 hours of extra gameplay and new unexplored storylines.
Buy it or not?
At first I didn’t thought this collection was worth buying, due to my hatred against remakes in general. I could not have been more wrong.
As an Assassin’s Creed fan it was one of the best decisions to get the improved trilogy of Ezio Auditore da Firenze!
For me I was scared the remake would destroy my memories of nostalgia which I was so fond of. However I am happily surprised and I can only insist that all fans of Ezio Auditore should have played this remarkable and beautiful game. Even if you haven’t played an Assassin’s Creed game before, this might be the best game to start the series with. Three improved games for the prize of (less that) one, it was a great first impression for me!
